Understory clearing is the job that transforms a Lowcountry woodlot. The big trees are fine — live oaks, water oaks, tall loblolly — but underneath them a wall of yaupon, wax myrtle, privet, and smilax has closed the woods off so you cannot walk them, see through them, or use them. Around Charleston, Summerville, Walterboro and across the South Carolina Lowcountry, we grind that brush layer away selectively, leaving the canopy untouched and the floor finished in clean mulch.

Long growing season, mild winters, plenty of rain: everything that makes the Lowcountry good for live oaks also makes it perfect for the shrub layer that swallows them. Yaupon and wax myrtle spread in thickets, Chinese privet seeds in from every fence line, and smilax stitches the whole mess together until a woods you could once walk through becomes a wall you walk around.
Left alone, the understory does not stay polite. It climbs, it thickens, and it steals the view and the use of the prettiest part of your property. Clearing it by hand is brutal, slow work. A tracked mulcher does it in passes — and does it without touching the trees that make the woods worth having.
This is precision clearing, not demolition. We walk the woods with you first and flag the keepers — the hollies you like, the dogwoods, the young oaks worth releasing. The machine works around them, grinding the brush and junk stems between, and the operator running it is the same person who walked it with you.
Opening the understory is also good for the trees left standing. Less competition for water and light, better airflow through the stand, and a clear look at every trunk — which in this climate is when problems like vine strangle and storm-cracked leaders actually get noticed early.
