Meggett was built on dirt worth farming. A rail spur reached Yonges Island in 1892 and the truck farms followed. By the 1920s the town called itself the Cabbage Capital of the World. Refrigerated boxcars left daily with cabbage and potatoes. That same ground now holds homes, horse places and family tracts. The farms are mostly gone, but the growing power is not. Meggett is about 1,390 people spread along Highway 165 between Hollywood and the Wadmalaw River. Nearly every parcel has a back edge going to myrtle, vine and volunteer pine.
That back edge is our work. ACE Basin Forestry runs a tracked mulcher and a tractor across this end of Charleston County. Brush gets ground where it stands, and open ground gets mowed. The understory comes out from under the oaks and lanes get cut back to the creek. Old field corners go under the rotary cutter, and homesites open without a scraped scar. The town's own land-use plan describes the ground plainly. Most of Meggett sits on the Weston, Edisto and Eulonia soils. They are nearly level and slow to drain, with water tables six to twelve inches down and elevations mostly under twelve feet. Much of that soil grows pine and hardwood forest. Where nobody manages it, the plan says, the understory turns very dense with shrubs and ferns. Anyone who has pushed into the back of a Meggett parcel in July knows the sentence is true.
Tracked mulching is the method built for that combination. The machine spreads its weight across soft ground, grinds the brush in place and leaves the root mat under a chip layer. Nothing gets scraped, so nothing washes toward the creeks. That matters here. Toogoodoo, Gibson, Swinton and McLeod creeks all drain the town, and the surrounding waters carry shellfish and outstanding-resource classifications. On saturated bottoms we wait for a dry stretch rather than cut ruts. We say which is which at the estimate.
Meggett protects its live oaks. Under the town's land development rules, a live oak of 24 inches or more needs a Board of Zoning Appeals variance to come down. Removing more than a few trees usually takes a permit too. Our work sits under that line by design. The mulcher takes the myrtle, smilax and privet out from beneath the canopy and leaves the oaks standing on a clean floor. That is what a marsh-front parcel on the Toogoodoo or Wadmalaw side was bought for.
The other Meggett landscape is the old field. The town's plan puts the historic farms here at 200 to 500 acres. Meggett County Park still shows the pattern: long straight fields flanked by drainage ditches that grew into rows of trees. Private tracts around Church Flats, Ethel Post Office Road and the Stono side carry the same bones. The plan calls this soil well suited to deer and wild turkey management. We build it out the way we do at home: plots drilled in the old field lines and shooting lanes cut with the wind. Reclaimed fields go back on a mowing rotation before they slide again.
