Brush clearing is the job you need when thick growth has taken over a piece of your property. Thick brush, saplings and vines go through the forestry mulching head on our Kubota SVL compact track loader. Lighter growth gets mowed flat by a tractor and brush hog, and the trees you want to keep stay standing.
Every stem we cut gets ground into chips on the spot, and those chips stay right where they fall. That chip layer covers the bare soil and holds it in place through the next hard Lowcountry rain. Most brush calls around here start the same way, with growth that crept in a little at a time. A wood line pushes in toward the yard, a fence goes under vines, or a pond bank closes up. Sometimes the job is an overgrown lot that nobody has touched in the last five or six seasons. The growth is almost always wax myrtle, sweetgum saplings, privet, blackberry canes and the smilax vine that folks call greenbrier.
We cut all of that down to the ground and grind it into a mulch layer right where it grew. Some people call the work brush removal, though the material stays put on the ground as cover. The stem size decides which machine comes out to your place more than anything else on the job. The forestry mulching head on our Kubota SVL compact track loader handles thick brush, saplings and heavier woody growth. It grinds the standing growth as the machine moves forward, so the ground below stays covered the whole time. The tractor and brush hog are the faster answer on lighter stuff like tall weeds, briars and young sprouts.
Plenty of properties need both machines, and running the two of them on one job is normal for us. The brush hog knocks down the open middle of a field, and the mulcher takes the thick edges and corners. Edge work is the most common kind of brush job we run all across the South Carolina Lowcountry. Fence line clearing is a good example, since a fence you cannot see is a fence you cannot fix. We run the machine down both sides of the line and hand back a clean strip you can use. Yard edges, pond banks, driveways and old field lines usually get the same treatment on that same visit.
Wood lines are the other edge that gets away from people, and palmetto scrub fills in the space underneath. Underbrush clearing along that line opens the view back up and lets air move through the trees again. The canopy trees stay right where they are, and only the low growth comes out from under them.
