Our family brings forestry mulching to Port Royal for overgrown lots and wooded corners that brush has closed in. The 2020 Census counted 14,220 people in the town, which sits on Port Royal Island in Beaufort County. Our forestry mulching work is done with a Kubota SVL compact track loader carrying a forestry mulching head. That head turns vines and saplings into a mulch layer, and the trees you choose to keep stay standing.
Port Royal sits between the Beaufort River and Battery Creek, and it was officially incorporated in 1874. Since 2000 the town has annexed land west of Battery Creek, plus parcels in the Shell Point and Burton areas. So the work here can mean a town lot in the Old Village or a wooded parcel across the creek. When saplings and thicket have taken a whole parcel, land clearing with the mulcher opens it back up.

The Old Village is Port Royal's historic center, and Paris Avenue is the main street for its shops. Its north-south streets are named for capital cities, with Paris, London, Madrid and Edinburgh among them. Just north lies Mossy Creek, a low-density residential area that crosses the line into the City of Beaufort. Lots in both areas can go wild with vines and saplings once the mowing stops for a season or two.
On a lot like that, brush clearing grinds the vines and thicket into mulch along the lot line. Before work starts, you flag the trees you want saved, and we keep the mulching head clear of them. The mulch stays on the lot as a soil cover, and the lot line is easy to find again. If you plan to build, lot and homesite clearing mulches the brush across the parcel and spares your keeper trees.
Water frames Port Royal, and Sands Beach sits on its southern tip where Battery Creek meets the Beaufort River. Off Paris Avenue, alligators and turtles are regular visitors among the cypress trees of the Town's Cypress Wetlands. Salt marsh counts as tidelands, and state law names tidelands as one of South Carolina's critical areas. Anyone who wants to alter a critical area needs authorization from the SCDES Bureau of Coastal Management.
We stay on the upland side of the marsh edge, and our guide to clearing wet ground covers the rules. On higher ground, hardwood understory clearing grinds out the thicket beneath the oaks and leaves the canopy overhead. Each year our family mulches the understory on its own 327-acre tract in the ACE Basin, near Yemassee. Rails once tied the two places together: the Port Royal Railroad ran from here to a junction in Yemassee.
Port Royal's Tree Permit generally covers removing any tree 8 inches DBH or more, and any specimen or landmark tree. DBH is the trunk's diameter, measured four and one-half feet up from the ground. A single-trunk live oak counts as a specimen tree at 12 inches DBH and as a landmark tree at 24. The property owner signs the Tree Permit application, and it goes to the Permitting Department at 700 Paris Avenue.
Our forestry mulching takes the brush, vines and understory around those trees, and the trees stay standing. For a landmark tree, any work inside its drip line, the ground under its canopy, needs an approved arborist report. We go over the keepers with you at the free estimate, and you decide on any permit before we start. Treat this as general information rather than legal advice, and ask the Town about your parcel first.
