We bring forestry mulching to North Charleston for overgrown lots and wooded back corners that brush has taken over. At the 2020 Census, North Charleston counted 114,852 people, the third-most of any city in South Carolina. The city spans Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties, and we work all three from our Charleston base. Our Kubota SVL compact track loader carries a forestry mulching head that grinds underbrush and saplings into mulch.
On larger tracts, our land clearing uses that same mulcher, and your keeper trees stay standing. The Cooper River forms the city's southeastern border, and the Ashley River forms much of its southwest edge. After the Civil War, phosphate fertilizer plants brought strip mining to the land between the Ashley River and Broad Path. The main route for hauling that phosphate became Ashley Phosphate Road.

Liberty Hill was founded in the 1870s, and the City's plan calls it the oldest neighborhood in North Charleston. Park Circle was laid out in 1915 as a concentric Garden City design around a central open space. On older blocks like these, a lot left alone fills with vines and saplings until you cannot see the ground. Our lot and homesite clearing grinds that growth into mulch and works close around each tree you keep.
If the wood line behind your yard creeps closer every year, brush clearing pushes it back. We grind the thicket into mulch and leave a clean edge that you can mow right up to. We also free fence lines buried in vines. Charleston Farms, between Rivers Avenue, Interstate 526, North Rhett Avenue and Remount Road, is in our range too.
The City's plan describes its Dorchester County side as almost entirely built out with suburban homes. Dorchester Road is the main road through that side, and Coosaw Creek and Indigo Fields are among its older subdivisions. Wescott Plantation, a multi-phase community east of Dorchester Road, is the largest development in that part of the city. Where a yard backs up to woods, our hardwood understory clearing mulches the brush and small stems beneath the canopy.
Deer Park and Pepperhill share the city's northeast quadrant with Charleston Southern University and Wannamaker County Park. On a wooded lot anywhere in the city, trail and access clearing mulches a usable path through the brush. We mulch the understory on our family's own 327-acre tract in the ACE Basin near Yemassee every year. Your North Charleston lot gets that same work, and you keep the shade trees with open ground beneath them.
The City adopted its tree rules in 1991, after Hurricane Hugo destroyed and damaged so many trees. The zoning code protects healthy trees 10 inches DBH and larger, measured as the trunk's diameter at breast height. Pines, sweetgums and invasive species are not considered protected trees. Outside those species, a tree 24 inches DBH or larger is a grand tree, and the code generally discourages clear cutting.
Under Section 6-16 of the zoning code, trees may not be removed on any site before a permit is secured. When a tree must come down, the contractor hired to remove it applies for the City's tree removal permit. Before the permit is issued, a City inspector or the Urban Forester inspects the tree to be removed. This is general information, so check with the City before any tree on your lot comes down.
